OB Medications

During a cold, it is very important to get plenty of rest, fluids, and chicken soup as these have anti-viral properties and will aid in boosting your immune system. If your symptoms do not resolve after one week of “over-the-counter treatment”, you will need to make an appointment with your Primary Care Physician.

*BRAT Diet – Bananas, rice, apple or applesauce, tea or toast.
**Sudafed – May use unless history of elevated blood pressure.

AVOID the following medications during pregnancy:
Aspirin (Excedrin/Anacin) ~ Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) ~ Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) ~ Correctol ~ Ex-Lax ~ Midol ~ Dayquil/Nyquil ~ Kaopectate ~ Pepto Bismol ~ Retin-A

Symptom — Recommended Treatment/Medication

Allergies — Alavert ~ Allegra ~ Benadryl ~ Claritin ~ Zyrtec 10 mg ~ **Sudafed

Backache — Extra Strength Tylenol ~ Stretching exercises ~ Heating Pad (use on low for 20 – 30 minutes)

Common Cold — Tylenol ~ **Sudafed ~ Hot Chicken Soup

Constipation — Colace ~ Fibercon ~ Metamucil ~ Milk of Magnesia ~ Increase water intake ~ Avoid greasy or spicy foods ~ Increase fiber (Bran, fresh fruits and green, leafy vegatables) ~ Increase physical activity (i.e. walking)

Cough — Mucinex ~ Robitussin DM

Diarrhea — Immodium AD ~ Increase water intake ~ *BRAT Diet

Fever — Extra Strength Tylenol (as directed) ~ Increase clear liquids ~ Avoid dairy products. If fever over 100 continues for 24 hours or more, contact our office.

Flu — Tylenol Flu ~ Increase fluids ~ Rest as much as possible

Gas — Gas X ~ Increase physical activity (i.e. walking)

Headache — Extra Strength Tylenol ~ Caffeine in small quantities ~ Vicks to temples

Heartburn/Indigestion — Maalox ~ Mylanta ~ Pepcid ~ Prilosec ~ Prevacid ~ Tums ~ Rolaids ~ Zantac 75 or 150. Avoid greasy or spicy foods ~ Avoid heavy meals, instead eat more frequent small meals. Sit up for at least one hour after eating ~ Elevate head of bed

Hemorrhoids — Increase water intake ~ Anusol ~ Preparation H ~ Tucks Pads ~ Witch hazel. Meticulous anal hygiene is imperative; after defecation, anus should be cleaned thoroughly.

Insomnia — Benadryl ~ Chamomile Tea ~ Unisom/Doxylamine ~ Reading ~ Avoid caffeine 6 hrs before bed

Nasal Congestion — Saline Solution ~ **Sudafed

Nausea — Eat crackers or dry toast upon waking ~ Eat smaller portions more frequently ~ Avoid greasy or spicy foods ~ Gatorade ~ Gingerale ~ Hot Tea ~ Sprite ~ *BRAT Diet ~ Emetrol ~ Motion sickness wristbands ~ Atomic Fireballs ~ Ginger root ~ Unisom 1/2 tablet two times a day ~ Vitamin B6 (50-100 mg per day)

Sore Throat — Chloraseptic Spray ~ Throat lozenges ~ Warm salt water gargle

Vomiting — Decrease solid foods ~ If unable to keep anything down, including liquids, for 12 hours or more, call our office or go to nearest emergency facility.

Yeast Infection — Monistat 7 ~ Gyne-Lotrimin ~ Mycelex ~ Vagistat
